Smardt Inc., like its sister company PowerPax, was established to maximize the chiller operating efficiencies of the Turbocor oil-free centrifugal compressor technology.

Led by Turbocor’s founding CEO Roger Richmond-Smith, the Smardt and PowerPax teams, many with long experience at Turbocor, came together to engineer a high-performance range of water-cooled and air-cooled oil-free centrifugal chillers from 60TR through 900 TR.

Operating energy savings are extraordinary, to many industry observers – but totally in-line with the range’s tight engineering specifications. All use flooded shell-and-tube evaporators with a 1 deg. K approach. All use shell-and-tube condensers, in water-cooled versions, and high-efficiency coils in the air-cooled range. All use PowerPax electronic expansion valves. And all use the advanced PowerPax controls software or the new Kiltech controller (www.kiltech.com) to fully harness the extraordinary capacities of the compressor technology.

Smardt’s Compact Modular chiller components – specifically designed to move through standard elevators and standard doors to sites where access is difficult or even “impossible”- come together to provide similar IPLV efficiencies. At one major site in Toronto, this range was used to change out the whole 400 TR chiller capability, literally within a few days of a major equipment breakdown.

In mid-2005, PowerPax won the 2005 AIRAH National Award for Refrigeration, a major accolade for the team.

In October, Smardt concluded an exclusive supply and distribution agreement with Direct Energy Business Services for Canada and Texas, enabling major energy conservation benefits for customers in those markets.

In December, Smardt concluded an exclusive relationship with the Kiltech controls group, further extending the functional controls, communication and efficiency benefits delivered to customers.

In January 2006, Smardt, PowerPax and Axima chillers drew capacity crowds at the 2006 AHR-EXPO in Chicago.

The Smardt 350 tr water cooled chiller installed at the Sears mall at Halifax, Nova Scotia has been delivering reliable energy savings since the day it was commissioned.
